TS # 10

On February 7, I met for a second hour with my tutee.  We discussed a lot of vocabulary from an essay that was in the practice GRE.  We also discussed a grammar problem from her textbook, but quite frankly it was an extremely difficult exercise and I was unable to explain how or why I chose some of the choices.  I was relying on instinct.  She said her class had been working on the problem for a couple of weeks.  I also helped with identifying when to use "a"  or "an" .  I have to say I was a little surprised she didn't know that one.  The test sentence asked for  " a(n)" answer.  She thought that the (n) meant the answer was a noun.  Unfortunately my grammar trick didn't help much on this particular question because the way the question was stated, the answer word could have begun with a vowel or consonant.  It should help with her writing and speaking though.
