Anthony TS# 10

Following the previous hour's discussion on use of social media in our modern society, Ahmed and I engaged in a debate. Ahmed chose to support the use of social media, so I took the opposing viewpoint. He stated, in opening remarks, how social media does a great job of connecting people like never before, helps prevent disasters (or magnitude of disasters), and can raise awareness for important issues that people need to hear about or discuss. He stated how social media gives voice to the common man. I refuted each of his point with opposing arguments, such as social media spreading fake news, invasion of privacy, affect on children's health and self image. The point of the exercise was for Ahmed to retort each of my opposing arguments, and he did a very good job. He was able to provide common debate etiquette by showing respect for my side, but refuting the argument using his own evidence and supporting facts. Following the debate, I ended the lesson with a fun listening activity. I showed Ahmed a short video from the TV show "Swamp People" that talked about Cajun cooking. This video is a good example of a unique American culture, and it tested his listening skills due to the heavily accented narrators. Overall, Ahmed enjoyed this video.
