Tutoring Session #6

This past Friday, Abdulaziz and I met for our third tutoring session at the Hecht House. Given that he enjoyed watching the academic lecture last session, we continued the trend into this week as well. I found a relatively straightforward academic lecture on the idea of "positive psychology" and how happiness in humans can be determined and measured. Prior to the start of the lecture, I gave Abdulaziz a vocabulary list with terms that may have been unfamiliar to him that included words like "psychology" "experiment" "genetic" and "paralyzed". I stopped the video every 5 minutes or so to gauge his understanding and we talked through topics he was unsure about. After, the conclusion of the video I asked the question "How does happiness vary across a person or culture?" and we worked together to draft a basic outline for the writing topic. We then reviewed four new idioms, including "to make a long story short" "it's not rocket science" "better late than never" and "costs an arm and a leg". Finally, Abdulaziz and I discussed best practices for class presentations, since he had to participate in one in the upcoming week. I advised him to not read off the slides, maintain strong eye contact with his peers, introduce himself and his topic clearly, and use transition words to move through the slides. I look forward to hearing how his presentation went and meeting with him again next week!
