'Spelling & Sentence Structure'
On Wednesday at approximately 4:00 PM, I met with Mohammed at the CIES center after I was finished with my conversation partner. We went to a classroom upstairs to begin tutoring. The first thing we covered was spelling and sentence structure. I provided him with a worksheet to complete. This worksheet had 30 questions. Each question gave three words, and he had to figure out which one was misspelled, if any at all. He struggled with this. He did not know some of the meanings of the words, but I made sure to define them and provide example sentences for him. The worksheet was level appropriate given how advanced he is in his CIES courses. For homework, I told him to pick one word from every fifth number and to write a sentence using that word. I told him that this would help him with developing sentences and using and identifying vocabulary words based on context clues.
The next thing we did was sentence structure. I provided him with a passage and asked him to find the errors in the passage. He highlighted as many as he could and we went back in and read over the passage again and found more errors. I explained to him why the spelling and grammar errors were wrong and made sure he understood.
