Ahmed and I met in Strozier for a multiple hour tutoring session. In this first hour, Ahmed brought up first some of the work that he had been doing in his CIES classes. We spent about ten to fifteen minutes discussing several minimal pairs in a list that he compiled. After this activity, I utilized ProCon.org for another intensive reading activity. We discussed difficult vocabulary that would be present, and then I had Ahmed read the article aloud. The article discussed the pros and cons of social media's heavy presence in our society. Ahmed is an avid Twitter user, so enjoyed this topic of reading material. After the reading, I asked Ahmed a few comprehension questions to assess his understanding of the reading material. After this, I asked him to form a stance on the article (either pro-social media use or con), and for him to take time to prepare for a debate with me. I chose whatever opposing side of his stance was, and we prepared arguments to use in a debate. The debate took place in the second hour.
