Continuing from the last blog post, after Ahmed and I reviewed the content of his description, I analyzed his writing and provided bottom-up feedback on the sentence structure and use of grammar in his writing. In addition to this, Ahmed still struggles with pronunciation and spelling, so this took a large portion of the review as well. I am continuing to teach him patterns in spelling in pronunciation (such as the effect an 'e' can have on vowel sounds), and he is beginning to make some progress in this area.
After conducting the writing exercise, I decided to do another activity that integrated reading and speaking. I found the script to a scene from a movie where two characters are having a very informal conversation. Ahmed and I did a role play activity where we assigned ourselves roles from the scene and read out loud the dialogue. This worked on Ahmed's reading and pronunciation skills. He really enjoyed the dialogue, and after reading, we discussed any vocabulary he was unfamiliar with. In addition to this, the dialogue had a few instances of slang, and this helped broaden Ahmed's knowledge of American slang. He definitely enjoyed that part.
