This Friday, I met with my tutee (Kubra) for the first time in the lounge of the Hecht house. We started our meeting by getting to know each other; she told me about her life, her husband and her career goals. She is from Turkey and she, along with her husband, were lawyers there. They moved to the states for personal reasons and now Kubra's goal is to pass the IELTS exam with an overall score of 7.
After getting to know each other we talked about the main challenges she faces with the exam. She has a hard time with the writing and listening portions of the exam. Her spoken English is amazing however, she has not learned enough low frequency words which is why she feels she hasn't achieved her preferred score on the exam yet. She also has a hard time with the listening portion because it is in British English instead of American English. From this, we decided to focus on improving her vocabulary by going through her text book and studying the low frequency words she doesn't know. Then, focus on listening by playing IELTS listening material available on their website and decoding the words she isn't used to hearing in the accent.
