Anthony TS #4
For my third tutoring session with Ahmed (fourth overall), we decided to do an hour session in a CIES classroom. I prepared a reading lesson plan for him to complete. Ahmed is a fan and avid player of the popular video game "Fortnite", and for the reading material, I found a level appropriate news article about Fortnite. It discussed the presence of Fortnite as an "esport" (video game competition) in high schools and colleges. This article focused specifically on the Kentucky Schools Athletic Association, and how they banned Fortnite as an esport because of how it portrays gun violence. Ahmed really liked this topic, because it was thought provoking, and it related to an activity he really enjoys. I had him read the article a couple times, and then he wrote answers a few comprehension questions I created. We had a discussion about his answers, reviewed any grammar mistakes in his writing, and after he finished with the questions, I reviewed the vocabulary words in the passage he did not understand. We went over the word meaning, its pronunciation (something Ahmed struggles with in reading), and different patterns that exist in English pronunciation. It was very helpful in helping him understand how to recognize common pronunciation patterns in words.
