On Monday, Abbas and I met for our weekly tutoring session. Given that he had expressed interest in learning more about adverbs at the end of our last session, I came prepared with an adverb lesson in hand. We began the lesson by watching the School House Rock video “ Lolly Lolly Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here” to introduce the concept of adverbs and its function in a sentence. We debriefed the video and then I had Abbas complete a basic worksheet in which he identified adverbs in a sentence, matched adjectives to the corresponding adverb, and chose the best adverbs in several sentences. We then played a game where we chose an adverb, had to think of a verb that agrees with the adverb, and craft a sentence using the phrase. I say we in this case because Abbas became a bit frustrated during this assignment so I assisted him throughout the process. While the adverb has many complex functions, I tried to stick to its most basic components so as not to overwhelm Abbas. While there is still more to learn, I feel the Abbas has begun to understand the purpose of adverbs and can start incorporating them more into his sentences.
