This past week, my tutee Abbas and I took a break from our conventional tutoring sessions and opted to get lunch and engage in conversation practice instead. We walked from CIES to what is left of the Union to get pizza at Seminole Pies. He was kind enough to pay for both of our meals (he said it was a thank you for tutoring him, which was incredibly sweet) and so we partook in a meal of cheese and pepperoni pizza. Having the opportunity to speak to Abbas in a more relaxed setting was a nice change of pace, as he is normally very focused during our tutoring sessions and prefers to work on academic material than engage in conversation. We spoke about his home country of Saudi Arabia, his previous jobs, and his motivation to learn English and study for a masters of engineering at an American University. He told me that he used to really enjoy playing soccer before his knee gave out and we bonded over a mutual appreciation for watching the game of tennis. While I offered to play with him sometime, he said he would rather prefer to watch the game so we agreed to go see a FSU tennis match soon. Overall, the lunch was a nice break from tutoring and I really enjoyed getting to know more about Abbas in the process.
