Tutoring Session #8
Abdulaziz Ajeeli

This past Friday I met Abdulaziz at the Hecht House for our weekly tutoring session and since the weather was a bit nicer, we opted to sit out on the back patio for a change of scenery. Given that Abdulaziz has enjoyed the format of the tutoring sessions so far, in which we listen or watch an academic lecture and practice his note-taking skills, we continued with a similar schedule for the lesson. Utilizing an auditory lecture I had found on the Louisiana Purchase of 1804 and Lewis and Clark's explorations to the West, I prepared a list of vocabulary words Abdulaziz may be unfamiliar with as well as a brief Powerpoint providing some basic background information on the time period. Since the lecture relied heavily on geography, I also showed maps as visuals in order to improve his understanding of the content. Given that the lecture was quite long, I would stop the recording every so often to check in and debrief any  concepts Abdulaziz didn't understand. He appeared to understand most of the content, but we did speak at length about the role President Jefferson played in this moment in history as well as how the U.S was able to purchase the land from France. Once the lecture concluded, I gave Abdulaziz a brief (7 question, multiple choice) comprehension quiz to test his retention abilities. Besides missing one question, he did extremely well on the quiz and demonstrated a strong ability to listen, synthesize, and process the auditory information given to him.
