This past Friday, Abdulaziz and I met for our weekly Friday tutoring session. Continuing our routine from previous weeks, we listened to an academic lecture on the rise of the American Supreme Court. Prior to listening, I provided a bit of background information on the nature of the Supreme Court and its role in American government as it can get kind of confusing for students who don’t know much about how our governance system is structured. The lecture covered numerous elements of the Supreme Court, including its role, its powers, and its history. After the audio lecture concluded, we debriefed the content of the lecture and I clarified any points Abdulaziz found confusing. To supplement his understanding , we also listened to lectures on the importance of two prolific Supreme Court cases, Brown v. Board of Education and Loving vs. Virginia and answered some brief comprehension questions. Abdulaziz seemed to enjoy the lesson, saying he learned a lot of new words to add to his receptive vocabulary. To conclude the lesson, per usual, I introduced him to several new idioms, including “To get bent out of shape” “Beat around the bush” “Go back to the drawing board’ and “Get your act together”.
