Book: Research Methods - The Essential Knowledge Base

The teacher asked the students to read the first chapter of the textbook for this class session.  The first chapter is called Foundations of Research Methods.  I asked the professor why she chose this chapter and she explained to me that this particular class is the most advanced, i.e 4B.  She went on to say that most of the students in this class are pursuing Graduate and Masters degrees, and need to understand the basic research methods.  After skimming this chapter, I came to the understanding that the students are learning about the basic building blocks of what it takes to write a research paper.  The chapter goes on to list and discuss in detail the different types of research & practices, how to conceptualize research, types of studies & relationships, types of data and the validity of research.  This textbook breaks down each topic into a sub-topic and gives detailed definitions of important terms that the students should know and understand and eventually apply to their research papers.  The students were asked to take notes from the first chapter that they think would benefit them the most, and provide an outline that the teacher can look over later on.
