4B Speaking
Felicia Ciapetta
In this course Professor Ciapetta began by asking students to open up the applications Sanico Recorder as well as a Word document in order to begin the activity. Professor explained that today in class the students would be completing a timed speaking sample and engaging in a group discussion by two of the students. The professor explained how the students use Sanico Recorder to record the speaking samples. The professor gave the students a practice speaking sample in which the students needed to test out the functions of the buttons and make sure their recordings were successful. The first question speaking sample was only 10-15 seconds. Once the students were comfortable with using the program the professor gave the second prompt in which the students needed to speak for 1 minute. After the speaking samples were completed, the students were required to transcribe their speaking samples with all of the English grammar mistakes and verbal pauses such as "um" and "err" included.
After the transcriptions, 2 students presented a group discussion on climate change in which they brought up the main issues and asked the rest of the group questions such as 1) What impacts will global warming have in the future? 2) In your country, what kind of climate change is appearing now? 3) What are three things you can do to help out the environment? 4) Which policies for climate change are going well in your country? The group had discussion about each of the different countries they are from and what they believe the government and the people should be doing about climate change. I learned that using speaking examples that maybe the students have experience with, such as laws and policies in their home countries, will encourage them to speak more to educate others on what their experiences are like. I really enjoyed this class and getting a look into the cultures of the students.
