9:00 am - 9:50 am

This Tuesday, I observed the 2A composition class taught by Olivia James. The students task was to correct grammar and spelling mistakes on essays before submission. During the class Ms. James walked around the classroom and gave each student some assistance with their assignment. I noticed that she gave constructive criticism as well as praise in each essay. She pointed out and thoroughly explained the mistakes the students made. The students had three prompts they could base their essay on. The first was to share an important person in their life, the next was to talk about a person that gave them good advice, and the last was to write about an important saying from their country. She also provided a template for students to use and a paragraph evaluation sheet that showed students where they needed to improve before submitting for evaluation. I also had the opportunity to talk with Ms. James about some of the ideas she implements in her composition classes. Two things I learned, and admired, is that she mainly focuses on meaningfulness rather than word count and she gives the students prompts they can put their emotion in. I do believe this type of focus makes the students more interested and enthusiastic about writing. This is definitely a concept I would use in my future classes. Overall, I really enjoyed this observation.
