Casey TS #1

I met with my tutee Indira Collins for the first time today Monday, January 13th. Indira is a middle- aged woman from Bogota, Colombia. Indira has a long relationship with her English studies as her husband is an American who lived and worked in Colombia as a Colonel in the US Air Force at the time that they met. Her and her husband lived for many years in Colombia before she moved to the United States. Indira has spent many years living in Doral in Miami- Dade County, Florida in which she primarily spoke Spanish in her everyday life, at home with her husband as well as working as a real estate agent in her community. After moving to Doral, she moved back to Colombia for 2 years and just recently relocated to Tallahassee, Florida because of her husbands job. She is now motivated to understand and speak English fluently in order to work and converse with her in-laws and community, specifically in her church. During our session, I assessed Indira's level of comprehension and understanding of English through our informal discussion of the non-academic and academic questions. I allowed Indira to read aloud and respond to the questions given and we had conversation about each. I focused my attention today on understanding what she has previously been taught in prior English courses and what she feels she needs the most help with in her studies. We made a list together of topics she struggles with including pronunciation, irregular verbs, prepositions, past participles and tenses. We discussed ways she can improve on these topics and what kind of materials would be most helpful for her. Indira is a very motivated student and she already has a great foundation of the English language to expand on.
