Observation #1 (1/13/20)
Students went immediately from the classroom to the computer lab downstairs at the start of class, where the instructor and her TA administered an online quiz. Students were required to complete fill-in-the-blank assignments utilizing vocabulary with proper spelling and grammar.
Some students finished the quiz before the fifty-minute class time was up, but the majority took the entirety of the class to complete the assignment. At the end of class, I spoke with the instructor about what her favorite and least favorite aspects of teaching were (interacting with the students being her favorite, and the amount of work she was required to do outside of the classroom being her least favorite).
Since the entire class period saw the students quietly working on their own individual work, I was unable to see how they interacted with the instructor—and one another—when given more freedom to converse. I look forward to observing more lively, hands-on classes later this week.
