'Meet & Greet'

On Tuesday at approximately 7:30 PM, Mohammed met with me at the Starbucks on FSU's campus inside Strozier Library.  We sat and spoke about our goals we wish to accomplish in life and what we hope to get out of the intensive english program.  I learned a lot about Mohammed and his educational past.  He is from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which I believe is to be the second largest city in his country.  He showed me pictures, and it is quite beautiful.  Mohammed talked about his experiences while living in the United Kingdom for three years, as well as his thoughts on living in the United States for only six months.  He isn't a fan of Tallahassee, but loves FSU.
Finally, we discussed what he thinks he needs the most help with in the English language.  He said listening, speaking and reading were his main struggles.  One of the things I noticed in the classes I observed last week was that the a lot of the students struggled with note-taking.  So I suggested helping Mohammed with note-taking since he is applying for graduate school at FSU, and will be required to write a lot of research papers.  He was so excited that I asked him because he is also one of the students who needs help.
In future sessions, I'm going to have him listen to music, read passages out loud, watch Ted Talks and have him take notes on topics where he will eventually write a brief paraphrased summary on each.
