Grammar 3B
Dr. Angel Rios
Monday @ 10:00 - 10:50
Lesson: Present Perfect Continuous
At the beginning of the class, Dr. Rios had an easy-going popular American song playing in the background as his students trickled in. When class began, he asked his students to pull out the worksheet that they had been working on Friday so that they could continue going over the problems. The students explained that they had already gone over questions #1 - 5, and that they needed to complete #6 - 12. Dr. Rios projected their worksheet onto the board, and briefly reviewed the first five questions they had already completed to ensure that his students still understood the concepts they had covered last week. As he moves on from the first few questions, he tells his students to answer at least one of the fill-in-the-blank questions each on the board from the worksheet using a dry erase marker that he provided. The students did just as he had asked and answered the questions to the best of their knowledge. When they finished, they all sat back down and he went over each question individually. As he was reviewing the questions, he told the students the correct answer, checked to see if what was written on the board was correct and explained to the students both why it was and was not correct. Dr. Rios explains to his students the irregular verbs, i.e. read. He walks around the room to ensure that the students have what is written on the board is also on their papers. Most of the students answers on their papers were not the same as what was on the board, so Dr. Rios explained that if he catches that happening again, he will be collecting their homework. As he continues with the lesson, he points out key words that the students should recognize in order to determine the proper english tense to utilize when it comes to filling in the blanks. He sees everything from their perspectives, but makes sure to quickly correct their mistakes. For extra practice, he asked his students to take out their phones and go to Kahoot.it to play a game. He uses this as an extra lesson and makes sure to stop after each question to review and explain the answer.
Kahoot - The game was a fill in the blank where the students needed to determine the verb conjugation, negation, the correct word or the proper way to ask a question. He encourages his students to ask questions, whether they are right or wrong. Dr. Rios incorporates pictures into the Kahoot game to keep the students interested and to allow them to pin point the sentence they are answering to a picture.
The students at this level project a very good understanding of the grammatical aspects of english, with a few errors here and there. Their writing and spelling could use a little more work, but their basic understanding is good.
